Kelly, Driscoll send Narberth to Delco League Finals

from the Daily Times posted 8/10/2020

One half of the Delco League championship series is set.

James Kelly and Frank Driscoll combined on a one hitter as the Narberth Mudcats blanked the Springfield Colonials, 3-0, to sweep the best-of-3 semifinal series.

Second-seeded Narberth awaits the winner of the series between No. 1 Wayne and No. 4 Marple Newtown. That series is tied and will be decided Tuesday at Devon Prep (5:30 p.m.).

Kelly went five innings and allowed the only hit, a double by Mark Gervasi in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kelly fanned four, did not walk a batter and retired 15 of the 17 hitters he faced to get the win. Driscoll was just as effective. He whiffed four and walked one and set down six of the seven batters he faced in two innings to earn his third save in the playoffs.

Cameron Barlo brought home Tommy Toal with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to break open a scoreless game. That would have been enough the way Kelly and Driscoll pitched, but the Mudcats tacked on two insurance runs later in the game just to make sure.

Ryan Guckin lofted a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to chase home Jim White and make it 2-0. White increased the lead to 3-0 when he singled in Vinny Vaccone in the sixth inning. It was his second hit of the game.
